Sheena Recommends: L'Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes

My new favorite mascara comes from my favorite drugstore brand, L'Oreal. Several years ago, my boss at the time who is now a major executive for a cosmetics ingredients company told me that L'Oreal had by far the best and most advanced color technology in the world of cosmetics, and quite honestly, I've found that to be true. They also tend to have good quality drugstore brand products that are great fill-ins when you've just bought a house and are trying to pay a mortgage while still looking your most fabulous.

So today, I'm highly recommending a new product to the beauty world - the L'Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes mascara. I'm impressed with not only its cost ($9), but the quality and the fact that the product actually does what it says! My lashes truly appear longer and thicker. It seems to catch the ends of the lash, which is an area that only one other mascara I found could do that well (Bad Gal Lash from Benefit Cosmetics).

I like it so much, I've bought it TWICE! This, kids, never happens!

I'm not the only one recommending this great new mascara - Health Magazine also announced this received "Best Mascara of 2012". Check it out!

I'm BACK!

It's been a while, friends!

WOW! So many new things to talk about in my recommendations blog! A couple of things to look for in my upcoming segments:
1) I bought a house in the last year, so my budget is a little tighter than usual, which means my "Budget Beauty" segment will be revived and you will likely see lots more posts in that section than ever before!
2) I'm experimenting with nail techniques so upcoming segments may focus a bit more on that than I have before as well.
3) LOTS more recommendations for Gift giving! After all, that time of year is upon us!!!

Get ready! I'm BAAAAACK!!!!

Sheena Recommends: Mad Men Makeup Trend

I wish this were an actual line of makeup because I would have it all, however, in this post I am simply referring to the fabulous makeup of the ladies of Mad Men. The epitome of "classic", every girl is "Don-ning" the perfect cat eye, fresh face, slight rouge and red-oh-so-red lipstick. I'm in love with this style.

I want to reference this fantastic article interviewing the head makeup artist for Mad Men, as she gives away many of her secrets and reveals products that she uses.

Before I found that article however, I figured out a few tricks to get the vintage look accomplished, and it might save you a few pennies.

First, apply liquid foundation. It doesn't have to be a full-coverage or thick foundation, so a drugstore brand like L'Oreal True Match foundation will work perfectly. I highly recommend applying with a sponge to keep from caking on. Next, use a good matching loose powder and brush on lightly. It's key to use loose powder and not pressed powder to get the right effect. I'm a fan of Bare Minerals, but the idea is to blend the mix of liquid and powder to get a good canvas. Next, apply a creme blush. Creme blush is designed to give long lasting, smooth coverage, with just a touch of sheen that you don't get in powder blush without having the shimmery kind (that's a bit too much for this look). I use Revlon's Creme Blush in Berry Flirtatious. It just takes a little to get the look, and the good news is it's a very "buildable" cosmetic, so start with just a touch and go from there. Swipe a finishing powder if you'd like at this stage.

Next, the eyes! I recommend a cream base like MAC's Paint Pot in Painterly or Girl Friendly if you'd like just a touch of pink. The idea on the lid is to create a nearly seamless color to the rest of the face. You don't want the focus to be on the shadow, you want it on the delicate cat eye line that you'll create with a liquid eyeliner marker like NYX Felt Tip Liner (these are easier to use than traditional liquid liners). The key is to create the point first just lightly outside of the lash line and to line all the way to the end of your lash line closest to your nose. Don't be afraid to go a bit thick with this - its your dramatic statement!

The finishing touch is the lips! The key here is not to pick a shimmery, glossy or satin finish lipstick. These are more popular, so check it before you leave the store to make sure you've picked up something more matte finish red lipstick. Revlon, again, has the classic colors here that are perfect to finish your lips. I recommend Revlon Matte Lipstick in Really Red (if you're feeling bold), or In The Red.

That's it!! Have a great time creating this fabulous classic look inspired by the television show, Mad Men.

Sheena Recommends: bareMinerals READY™ Eyeshadow 4.0

Finally, Bare Escentuals has done something new with their eyeshadows...pressed them! I'm super excited about this because traveling with my normal loose shadows, that I love so much, is really quite a pain! If you've traveled with yours, you know much of the powder tends to end up spilled, wasting quite a bit of product and therefore, money! I've tested a few of the new shadows at a local salon and I have to admit, I am imPRESSed...get it? :)

The colors are very dense, which is great because it only takes a little bit to get a great amount of color. The company claims that they are long-wearing...I haven't really seen that effect yet, but it may be due to the type of primer I am using, so I'm still testing that out for the best combo. They are a great price at $20 for 2, $30 for 4. Buy them at your local B.E. supplier or online at Sephora.

Sheena Recommends: MAC Holiday Collection 2011

It's our favorite time of year again, dear fellow MAC Cosmetics lovers! The new MAC Glitter & Ice collection will go on sale at the end of October/early November in most areas of the US. As I've mentioned many times before, this is the absolute best opportunity to start buying MAC products, if you've never tried them...and the best to stock up, if you have! Beautiful, sparkly white and silver packaging is really making this set stand out in 2011. You'll need to find these at your local MAC counter, and don't wait! I've learned over the past eight years to be there on the release date if you have your heart set on a particular collection, as they don't last long, and when they're gone, they really are gone forever! Here's a sneak peak!

Pricing will vary depending on the sets.

Sheena Recommends: Lancome Color Design 5 Shadow and Liner Palette

I am SUCH a huge fan of these new shadow and liner sets from Lancome. I have always been a little bit of a fan of Lancome products over most every other department store brand (MAC being the eternal exception to this!), but for a while they have disappointed me in their color lines. Until now!

My favorite shade palettes are the Mauve Cherie (soft yellow shimmer/ plum shimmer/ matte taupe plum/ silver taupe/ black shimmer) and Violet Sweetheart  (pink champagne shimmer/ matte lavender/ matte soft blue gray/ mauve pink shimmer/ shimmering violet) sets. It is a fantastic deal at $48 each (the liners alone could cost nearly $20), and they work very well as either wet or dry shadows.

*Quick Tip - use a small liner brush, wet, to create a solid, almost liquid liner look with these. Great for a smoky eye!

Buy them at your local department store, or online at Sephora.

Sheena Recommends: Equate Microdermabrasion Exfoliating Cleansing Towelettes

These lovely little wipes are an absolute necessity. I don't always buy "off-brand" cosmetic or personal care items, but after Pond's discontinued their similar line of Cucumber Wipes, I decided it was worth a shot. I'm so glad I did! I have oily skin and am often worried that pre-moistened towelettes will break out my skin, but these really perform. They leave no trace of makeup (yes, even that waterproof mascara and liner), and they have a pleasant scent that doesn't linger. One side is a soft cloth, the other a beaded exfoliating pad. The best thing? The COST!! For around $6 at your local Wal-Mart you've got a good 2-3 months supply of a nice daily exfoliating tool.
